Chapter 16

After dinner, Zoe sent Verbena and Victoria off to relax and cleaned up the kitchen.

It wasn’t long before the house was quiet.

Zoe sat in the overstuffed chair in the office, taking advantage of the time and finishing another chapter of her story. Her phone buzzed and when she saw the number, she declined the call. The last thing she wanted to do—ever again—was talk to Peter. He could take a long walk off a short pier for all she cared.

“Hey, I don’t want to interrupt, but could we chat for a minute?” Austin hovered in the doorway.

She tucked the phone under her leg and clicked save on the file before snapping her laptop closed. “What’s up?” At least now she didn’t prepare for heartache any time he wanted to talk. That was progress.

A small plant covered in yellow tea roses appeared from behind the door. He carried it over and handed her a note.

Because . . .

I’m looking forward to our relationship blooming.

P.S. These are Lemon Spice Tea Roses.

After reading the note a second and third time, checking that the words hadn’t been a figment of her imagination, she hugged him.

He held her close.

She tilted her head back, wanting him to kiss her. “I didn’t expect this.”

“Good. I tried to find something called Lemon Chiffon, but I don’t think there is one.”

“I love them.”

He brushed his thumb across her lips. “I’ll let you get back to writing.”

“Okay.” It was the most unoriginal, unimaginative thing she could’ve said in response.

“Good night.” He lingered a second before walking out the door.

Why hadn’t she stopped him? She didn’t need to write. Well, she did, but it could wait. “Austin, wait.”

“Yes?”

“If you need to work…” She motioned to the computer.

His lips twitched into a half-smile. “I won’t bother you if I work in here while you write?”

“No. No, not at all.”

Her phone buzzed again, and she glanced at the text.

Zoe, please answer. I really need to talk to you. If Peter got desperate, he could email her, just like before.

“You won’t bother me at all.” She dropped back into the chair and opened the laptop.

Austin settled at the desk and quickly disappeared into a world of numbers and code, or whatever filled his screens.

Fighting the distraction of having him close, she glanced at her little plant. Austin’s romantic gesture inspired her, and she wrote two chapters, knowing she’d need to tighten them up and add tension. In that first pass, her hero was too sweet, too doting. But given her current mood, that was all she could write.

An hour later, she closed her laptop and picked up her plant. “Goodnight.”

Austin jumped. “Sorry, what?”

“I’m headed to bed.”

“Oh.” He stood and stretched. “I should probably do the same soon. We have a wedding to plan tomorrow.” After a second of hesitation, he crossed the room and kissed her on the cheek. “Night.”
